Good Shoes

Last week while my son was practicing baseball I was chatting with his coach about the pain associated with exercise. Due to recent injuries I had been to see an orthopedic doctor to ensure I wasn’t making things worse. After x-rays he kindly said, “Beth, at your age with all you do, things are going to hurt.” Ha.

The coach was laughing at my story when he offered sound advice. “You need to have the right shoes.” The funny thing is, I believe very much in shoes and the amount in my closet proves it. But the amount of shoes was not the point. He didn’t say I needed good shoes. He didn’t say I needed more shoes. What is said is true. I needed the right shoes.

Any foundation needs to be strong, and it needs to be tailor made for you, your business and your family. What may work well for me; may not be right for you. As this year approaches the end, it’s a great time to inspect your foundation and see if it needs repair.

There are four areas to consider; physical, spiritual, mental, and social.

Physical: The most popular television shows now seem to center around health. That’s because we can change our lives dramatically by utilizing the wealth of information available on making healthy choices. So many great options now exist making good health and nutrition a priority. It defeats your purpose if you seek new opportunities without the energy needed to pursue them.

Spiritual: It has been proven time and time again that faith is important. No matter your religion, it’s important to have a belief system that offers moral definition and an ability to believe in something greater than yourself. If you have become too busy to focus on your faith, you may find yourself needing a surge of inner strength found that can only be found in prayer and introspection.

Mental: More and more adults are going back to school. There is something extremely productive about learning new skills and striving to achieve new goals. It’s also good for your brain to stay active and pushed to new levels. Allot time to learn something new and increase your knowledge in this world that is changing at a rapid rate.

Social: Are you having fun? The busier we get, the more serious people become. We must allow time for friends and fun, and it won’t happen if we don’t make it happen. Laughter is one of the healthiest things we can do, so make time to be in environments where you can smile, especially when you are at home.

No matter how busy you are, you never be caught up. It’s that simple— so quit trying. If you feel like your life could use some power and strength, then step back and take a look at your foundation. It should feel as stable and as sturdy as the perfect pair of shoes.
