Smart cars, organic food, or if even if you love trees is not the issue. You should become environmentally conscious.
For years as a trainer in the business world, days would involve going into businesses to teach seminars or meet about training events. Each day would be different, as each office had its own environment.
One day I went into two separate offices. One seemed generic. Quiet, slow, and OK, I’ll say it-drab and boring. Then I went to another. As I got on the elevator to go to their floor, I could hear music. All I could think was, “I hope I’m going there!” The closer I got to my destination, the louder the music became. “We will we will rock you,” was blaring as I got off to enter. To my eager surprise, it was where I was going. They were in the middle of a promotion, and the whole office was participating in getting ready.
Environments don’t just happen, they are created. While most offices won’t be blaring music as you enter, it is amazing how the pace of the work being done is often in direct proportion to the level of enthusiasm. Where people are happy and feel important, often you will find higher productivity. Where the atmosphere is slow and boring, often it is reflected in less productivity due to less excitement about the job.
I’ve never been a fan of gimmicky trends or shallow sales tactics. Most of what I teach is based on mastering basics and excellence in customer service and communication. However, creating positive environments where people enjoy getting the job done often produces less turnover and increased opportunity over time.
This is also true in the home. Often there is a feeling that predicts behavior. If it is relaxed, it is relaxing. If it’s fun, people want to stay. If it’s tense, others become tense. The environment created depicts how others respond.
Basic questions will determine how environmentally conscious you are. What is the atmosphere as you enter the home or business? Are people happy? Do they smile and make eye contact? Is there chaos? Are there opportunities to build relationships? Are others growing? What is the background noise, are others talking and laughing? Do employees feel a part of a team?
Creating a positive environment can change everything. It’s is an intentional act that breeds a better atmosphere to produce specific results. Good days can happen on their own, but often it is consistent leadership that understands the importance discipline and utilizes the power of influence to make the changes needed to empower others to succeed.
Where do you stand on environmental issues? It may seem to be one of those issues that rests on the back burner for others to address. However, in a setting where multiple personalities must communicate and work towards common goals, it can be a strong conduit for positive change. Become an activist. Get involved in the environment. It’s one conscious decision that everyone will notice!
