“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve…it doesn’t matter whether you’re a lion or gazelle – when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”
It’s an old story, relevant because everyday, we run for something. The question is, for what? A wise man once said that we are always running away from something or towards something. Perhaps it’s worth considering.
Thankfully, we are neither lions or gazelles simply trying to survive to the next day.
We are, however, ultimately searching for a purposeful reason to get up and get running eagerly towards something that matters. To do that, we must adjust our mindset accordingly.
First, we must accept the fact that we must participate. Life requires that we move forward at our chosen pace, otherwise we will be left behind in a world of regret.
Next, evaluate motives.
Are you up for it? Any level of momentum requires that we are up for the challenge physically. Life is demanding, and we must do our part to generate and reserve energy by taking care of our bodies. It serves little purpose to strive for anything if we are unwilling to accept the fact that a great deal of our success comes from keeping up and feeling good. Do what is right by your body.
Are you running from something? Often we busy ourselves with small tasks to avoid the big ones. We can spend weeks, sometimes years, busy without accomplishing much. We keep up the cycle to avoid the pressure of acknowledging where we might have fallen behind. Technically, this is running from reality.
Are you running towards something specifically? Once I was asked by a random person a simple question that spoke volumes about my countenance. “What is your hurry?” At the time I didn’t even know I was in a hurry. It was a habit of running from one thing to the next. Hurry was not a trait that I aspired to nurture.
Are you running in circles? Often we realize that we keep ending up where we started. In that same job, trying to work out that same unhealthy relationship, hoping those extra pounds will wilt away, or waiting until its convenient to strive for that dream that just won’t seem to go away. This cycle is relentless, but you can always chart a new path. It just requires one step in a new direction.
Life is a balancing act, which few learn to master. If you are busy, evaluate why. While it seems everyone is running fast in some direction, only a few are intentional enough to know what direction.
Nothing produces energy like a sense of accomplishment. Take each day, evaluate your motives, prepare for victory, and run like nobody else. A winner will emerge!
