How to Kill a Nation-How to Save a Nation: You Pick

Hands Holding Give ThanksOften, I mourn the moral decline of our country and wonder what a simple person like myself can do to help. Seems helpless, my little amount of influence in a world so huge.

In my small world, there are others who agree with my perspective. We pray for God to reach down and help turn things around where people care about one another and things become safer and friendlier. And we wait.

As a wife, mom, and career woman, I see from several lenses. Kids, they have it better than we did growing up, but most are not thankful. Many instead complain about what others have and wish for it. Respect for adults is in decline and parents have accepted it as normal teen behavior. Marriages are tough, and often surrendered to divorce as options seem fruitless and people are tired of looking for solutions.  At work, we focus on money and status instead of measuring our impact on the world. We compete with others instead of enjoying others. The view too often is on what we don’t have instead of realizing what we do have.

In Philippians 4:4-7 we read,  “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Whether or not you believe in a devil, we have been robbed of what could save our nation. Thankfulness. Without it, we have no peace. Thus, we are a bunch of unhappy people complaining about what everyone else seems to have and desperate for an edge that gives us the “one up” on others.

Widespread lack of gratitude is killing families as well as our nation along with our spirit of optimism. Thankfulness–one person, one family, one child, one parent, one worker, one woman, one man, at a time–we can be the change we seek.

Look around; you are blessed. We are blessed. We are an exhausted nation desperately seeking more meaningful lives. Changing the world won’t happen with an election. It will happen when we, the people, become thankful for our God, nation, families, jobs, homes, and world that is beautiful and miraculous. We can even become grateful for our problems when we realize we are each other’s solutions.

Personal choice is powerful. Pick peace by choosing to live thankful for what you have while pursuing what you wish for. You are in charge of your attitude; do your part.  Pay attention. Unplug and look into the eyes and souls of others. Be a solution to another’s problem. Be kind. Encourage others. Such attitudes are infectious and oh so refreshing. Not to mention, it’s possibly the very thing that could save the soul of our great nation.

Thank you for reading and sharing.
